Wyeth developing another HRT for menopause

Drug maker Wyeth has developed and is actively testing a new drug to treat . The drug, named Aprela, has shown favorable results in the initial studies. Current evidence gathered in the study suggests that the drug may pose fewer risks and milder side effects than Prempro and Premarin, Wyeth’s other menopause drugs.

Prempro and Premarin , along with Provera, which is made by Pfizer, have come under attack in recent years as mounting evidence revealed that the drugs can increase the risk of developing cancer. Plaintiffs lodging claims against the drug makers argue that the manufacturers failed to voice sufficient warning about the increased risk of developing breast cancer that the drugs present. Approximately 5,000 women have filed against Wyeth, contending that the company’s s ( replacement therapies) caused them to develop breast cancer.

A study monitoring 3,400 recipients of Aprela indicated no evidence of increased breast cancer rates, compared with women who received or placebo. Aprela recipients also showed the same relatively lower rates of breast tenderness and pain as Evista and placebo recipients – a significant benefit considering that breast discomfort is the main reason why stop using menopause drugs

Other studies revealed that Aprela recipients experienced better sleep and diminished compared to women who were treated with placebo. Increased bone density, improved sexual function, and less vaginal dryness were also evident in late-stage tests of Aprela.

Wyeth will submit Aprela to the FDA for approved use in the second half of 2009. If approved, the drug may provide a better line of treatment for postmenopausal women. Its marketing would also help the company offset continual losses resulting from its Prempro suits.

Breast Cancer is a curse on women. Manufactures should take utmost care in prominently displaying the health risks of their products.

Wow…..very sad. Did you all know that this drug is made from the PMU industry? (Pregnant Mare Urine) Wyeth is not letting that info be known!!
We can send a man to the moon but can't develop an effective drug without being cruel to thousands of mares?? I rescued one PMU filly 4 years ago and she is wonderful! As a nurse, all I can hope for is that women do their homework…My mother had a hysterectomy in her 40's refused HRT(good for her!) NOW in her 70's, is healthy as ever! Good diet and exercise! Imagine that……..

Thank you so much for your comment! That's interesting information about
the PMU industry, and about your mother's experience NOT using HRT.
      Thanks so much for sharing!

Wyeth is BIG and POWERFUL!!! They knew the assosiated health risks Premarin posed to women since it's inception way back in 1942!! Whay should they be trusted regarding women's health with a new drug when they have knowingly exposed so many women to serious healt risks, not to mention the horses used to collect the estrogen rich urine are so mis-treated and their babies are destined for slaughter for human consumption!!!
