Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee holding oil spill claims seminars in June
Members of the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee (PSC) who negotiated a settlement with BP over its 2010 Gulf oil spill are offering a series of one-day seminars this month to explain details of the agreement. The seminars, which kick off Monday, June 18 in New Orleans, will be offered in eight cities throughout the Southeast and are open to lawyers and certified public accountants.
According to organizers, the seminars will provide an in-depth analysis of the Settlement Program, guiding attendees through the process and helping them identify a broad range of businesses and individuals, even those far from the coast, who are eligible for compensation under provisions set forth in the settlement.
BP and the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee reached an agreement on March 1, ahead of a February trial in New Orleans that was delayed to accommodate the ongoing negotiations. The settlement will be entirely funded by BP, and except for a $2.3 billion limit on commercial fishing claims, no cap was set on the amount of damages BP would have to pay.
In addition to BP funds, commercial fishermen maintain the right to seek punitive damages from BP’s Deepwater Horizon partners Transocean and Halliburton, and any claimants who believe they have been unfairly compensated or rejected by the newly established Deepwater Horizon Claims Center maintain the right to pursue their claims against BP in court.
Seminar attendees will have the opportunity to hear PSC members who obtained the settlement explain first-hand the criteria for filing business and individual economic losses resulting from the spill, including details of the seafood compensation program, coastal and wetland real property damages, real estate sales losses, Vessels of Opportunity claims and vessel damages, and medical benefits.
