peanut butter 150x150 Salmonella fears prompt Rich Products Corp to recall products containing Sunland peanutsThe nationwide involving peanut products made by -based , Inc. was expanded this week to include two products made by Rich Products Corporation (“Rich’s”): ® brand Cup and ® Peanut Buttery Fudge Deep Dish Pie.

“Rich’s Quality Assurance Team has determined that the two products contain ingredients sourced from a supplier using Sunland, Inc. in the production of certain lots of the products and have the potential to be contaminated with ,” the company said in a statement. “Specifically, the provided by our supplier contains peanuts sourced from Sunland, Inc.”

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious illness in anyone who consumes food contaminated with the organism. Those infected typically experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping and pain. Salmonella infections can be fatal to young children, the elderly, and anyone with a weak or compromised immune system. In some cases, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream, causing more serious complications, including arterial infections/aneurysms, endocarditis (heart inflammation), and arthritis.

“Rich’s has not received any reports of illness connected with this product and has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure,” the company said.

Sunland originally recalled certain peanut and almond products on September 24. The company expanded its recall on October 4 to include all products manufactured in its peanut butter plant after March 1, 2010.
