After receiving complaints in regards to overheating, melting and posing a fire hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and PackTite are recalling nearly 9,000 PackTite™ Heating Units for Bed Bug Control. The recalled heaters were manufactured within the United States.
PackTite bed bug heating units were sold with PackTite original bed bug treatment systems. The instructions asked consumers to place items for bed bug treatment inside the heater’s black canvas bag and turn the heater on inside the bag. Attached to a black wire frame, the white heaters fit inside the PackTite bag.
Printed in white along the side of the bag is “PackTite™.” The bags measure about 36 inches long by 19 inches wide by 24 inches tall. None of the recalled heaters have any visible text along the up-facing side of the heater casing; however, they do have reset instructions written on the underside of the heater.
Thus far, PackTite has received three consumer complaints regarding the heaters overheating and melting. In one case, the items being treated within the heated bag were singed. No injuries have been reported.
From October 2009 through January 2013, the recalled heaters were sold by pest control companies and pest control product distributors nationwide, such as Atlantic Pest Solutions, Bedbug Central, Bedbug Supply, Broadway Exterminating, Dana Pest Control, Do My Own Pest Control, Grainger, M&M Environmental Isotech, K-9 Sweeps, Orkin, Pestaway, Round-the-Clock Pest Control, Steritech, Stern Environmental, Tallman Scientic, Univar and US Bedbugs for between $300 and $330 for the system and about $53 for the heater (if sold separately).
Consumers that have purchased the PackTite Heating Units for Bed Bug Control should immediately stop using the product and contact PackTite to receive a replacement heater free of charge.
