MAT Industries and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have announced a recall of nearly 100,000 HDX™ and Powermate® two-gallon air compressors. This recall comes shortly after the CPSC learned that the terminals of the pressure switch can get too close to the motor housing, electrifying the air compressor and putting consumers at risk for shock.
The HDX™ and Powermate® brand two-gallon electric air compressors have a pair of one-gallon tanks that are stacked on each other. Each air compressor offers 120-volts, an operating pressure maximum of 100 PSI and air delivery of .4 SCFM at 90 psi.
Printed with HDX in white on the top cylinder, the HDX air compressors are gray, including model number/sku numbers of VSP0000201.HDX, VSP0000201.HDX1 and 947282, with numeric serial numbers. The back of the top air compressor cylinder should have the model and serial numbers printed on a sticker.
The Powermate® air compressors are red with Powermate printed in white on the top cylinder. If there is a letter in HDX or Powermate compressor serial number, that model is not included in the recall.
No injuries or accidents have been reported.
From June 2010 through October 2013, the recalled air compressors were sold at the Home Depot and online at homedepot.com (HDX air compressors only), Menards and other stores (Powermate air compressors) nationwide for a price between $80 and $120. The recalled air compressors were manufactured in China.
Air compressors included in this recall should no longer be used and consumers should contact MAT Industries in order to receive a free repair.
