Ford has announced a recall of nearly 85,000 cars and SUVs for a problem with the axle that increases the risk or a crash or for vehicles to roll out of the “park” position. The recall encompasses the 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, the 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT, and the 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS.
Ford says there have been no reports of accidents or injuries associated with the defect.
The problem is linked to the improper installation of a clip in the axle, according to information released by the automaker. This may allow the halfshaft to disengage from the linkshaft, which can prevent power from being transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the possible defect could allow vehicles to roll out of the “park” position if the emergency brake is not engaged.
Ford will notify customers who have affected vehicles and will begin making repairs free of charge by the end of August.
