Nearly 79,000 VH110 Electric Space Heaters are being voluntarily recalled by Vornado Air. Reports say that consumers have been struggling with the heaters melting, catching fire and igniting anything nearby.
Sold in both black and white, the recalled Vornado VH110 Whole Room Vortex electric space heaters measure about 10.5 inches high, 9 inches deep and 10.5 inches at the base. The unit’s top has an on/off switch as well as high/low heat settings. The front of the unit features the Vornado logo and a solid gray “V” behind it. The fourth and fifth digits of the recalled heater’s serial number are 1 and 3. The bottom of the unit will have the model and serial numbers printed on a silver decal.
Before the recall was issued, Vornado was aware of 29 incidents of the recalled heaters overheating and melting. Only seven of the 29 reports detailed the heaters catching fire, while one report mentioned smoke inhalation and another reported property damage from the heater’s smoke and soot.
Each recalled space heater was sold for about $60 at Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Menards, Orchard Supply, Target and other various retailers across the nation, as well as online at Vornado.com and Amazon.com. The heaters were sold between June 2013 and May 2014 and manufactured in China.
Consumers who have identified one of the recalled Vornado VH110 space heaters in their home should turn off and unplug the device until they have contacted Vornado regarding instructions on how to receive a free replacement unit.
