Almost 30,000 tankless gas water heaters are being recalled by Challenger Supply Holdings after reporters that the products may overheat, posing a fire risk to consumers.
According to the recall announcement, all models of the white, single- and dual-purpose Coaire and Quietside brand tankless gas water heaters are now under recall. These products can heat up to 4 or 7.2 gallons of water per minute, respectively. The recalled heaters measure about 25-28 inches tall x 15-19 inches wide x 8-14 inches thick. The top-front of the heaters has the words “S-Line Condensing”, as well as “Coaire” or “Quietside” along the bottom-front.
While no injuries have resulted from the recalled heaters, Daesung Celtic Enersys, the manufacturer, has received 40 reports regarding the units overheating. Just two incidents caused burns to the wall the heater was mounted on, while two others caused fires and property damage.
From July 2008 through August 2014, the recalled tankless water heaters were sold nationwide and on various websites like Amazon.com for between $500 and $2,000. The heaters were manufactured in Korea.
Consumers that have identified one of the recalled tankless water heaters in their home should contact Challenger Supply Holdings immediately to arrange a free repair. Until the repairs are completed, do not use the recalled water heater.
