GM recalls certain 2015 Buick Encore and Chevy Trax vehicles

GM recall GM recalls certain 2015 Buick Encore and Chevy Trax vehiclesAccording to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), both 2015 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax vehicles are now being recalled by General Motors (GM). The NHTSA’s notice suggests that approximately 2,295 of the vehicles registered in the U.S. suffer from an electrical issue that may disable power steering while the vehicle is in motion.

The NHTSA released the following statement in regard to the cause of the latest GM recall:

“In certain [Encore and Trax] vehicles, the steering column assembly housing may come into contact with the power steering printed circuit board. This contact could eventually cause enough wear on the power steering printed circuit board to cause a sudden loss of power steering assist.”

Although certain aspects of the problem have changed from recall to recall, two other GM recalls were initiated recently in light of the same problematic component. The first recall began in the summer of 2014 when several Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn vehicles were recalled for power steering issues, then last February roughly 70,000 Pontiac and Chevrolet vehicles were recalled again due to the problem. In each of the three recalls, the unsafe steering column assembly was manufactured by the company Nexteer Automotive.

Encore and Trax vehicles built between the following dates are included in this recall announcement:

  • 2015 Buick Encore vehicles built between Nov. 27, 2014 and Feb. 24, 2015;
  • 2015 Chevrolet Trax vehicles built between Nov. 18, 2014 and Feb. 17, 2015.

Recall notices are currently being mailed to registered vehicle owners; however, GM has not set a specific date of when these notices will go out. The parts needed to repair the aforementioned cars will likely be shipped to GM dealers around April 1.
