Zak Designs, a tabletop and dinnerware accessories company founded in 1976, has announced water bottle recall comprising of nearly 178,000 26-ounce water bottles. The recalled water bottles contain an inner plastic straw in the flip-top part of the twist-off cap, which may break and pose a choking hazard to unsuspecting consumers.
According to the water bottle recall, the 26-ounce bottles are roughly 10 inches tall with a flip-top spout featuring color inner plastic straws. The straws were available in clear, blue, green, light purple, gray, or red. Sold exclusively at Target’s “Back-to-College” promotion sale, the bottles feature pop culture characters such as Captain America, a Batman design, Minions, My Little Pony, Spiderman, Star Wars aircraft, a Superman logo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thor and Wonder Woman. The water bottles themselves came in colors including clear, gray, navy blue, pink, teal blue with caps in red, pink, blue and yellow.
To identify the specific water bottles included in this recall, check beneath the bottle for the embossed “Zac Designs” logo, as well as mold number “14158.” Any 26-ounce bottles with a black inner straw or black twist-off cap are not recalled.
Before the water bottle recall was announced, Zac Designs received nine reports of the plastic straw breaking within the bottle, causing seven reports of plastic fragments being spit out by consumers drinking from the bottle. No injuries or deaths have been linked to the recalled water bottles.
From June 2015 through July 2015, the recalled water bottles were sold exclusively at Target stores for roughly $10. The water bottles were manufactured in China.
Consumers that have identified one or more of the recalled water bottles in their possession should stop drinking from them and contact Zak Designs regarding instructions on how to receive a free replacement cap and straw.
