Garden of Life LLC is recalling several of its raw meal organic products because an ingredient used in certain lots may be contaminated with salmonella virchow. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Garden of Life has asked its retailers to remove the lots of raw meal from its shelves. Consumers are advised to check the lot number of their raw meal product and return any that are involved in the recall to the place where the product was purchased for a full refund. A list of recalled Garden of Life products with lot numbers and expiration dates can be found here.
Garden of Life worked with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), its suppliers and other third-party experts and identified the likely source of salmonella contamination to be Organic Moringa Leaf powder from a supplier used only in raw meal. To eliminate this issuein the future, Garden of Life says it will remove Organic Moringa powder from its raw meal. New raw meal products are expected to be in stores through retailers within weeks.
Raw meal is sold at better health food stores, natural grocers and online. Anyone who has consumed a recalled Garden of Life raw meal product and become ill should seek medical attention.
