Duncan Hines Cake Mixes Recalled Over Potential Salmonella Contamination

Recall Duncan Hines cake mix 373x210 Duncan Hines Cake Mixes Recalled Over Potential Salmonella ContaminationDuncan Hines is recalling four of its boxed cakes mixes after federal health officials tentatively linked an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses to the products.

The recall, announced on Monday, Oct. 5, covers Duncan Hines Classic White, Confetti Cake, Butter Golden, and Classic Yellow cake mixes.

“Conagra Brands is collaborating with health officials in connection with a positive finding of Salmonella in a retail sample of Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix that may be linked to a Salmonella outbreak,” the company’s recall announcement stated.

Duncan Hines said the outbreak remains under investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Federal officials normally become involved in outbreaks of Salmonella because outbreaks of foodborne illness caused by the bacteria can be deadly for some.

Most people will recover from a Salmonella infection without hospitalization, but for the elderly, young children, and anyone in frail health or with a weakened immune system, an infection can become so severe that it can lead to death.

CDC estimates Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths in the U.S. every year. More than 83 percent of Salmonella illnesses are caused by the consumption of contaminated food.

According to Duncan Hines, individuals with confirmed Salmonella infections reported eating a cake mix at some point prior to becoming ill, and some may have consumed the products raw. The company advised consumers to avoid eating raw batter as well as raw eggs and flour, which can also harbor the bacteria. Washing hands, utensils, and work surfaces after making cake batter can also help prevent the spread of Salmonella.

Duncan Hines says the cake mixes included in the recall were distributed and sold in the U.S. and limited international exports. No other Duncan Hines products or Conagra Brands’ products are impacted by the recall, the company said.

The company says that anyone who purchased the recalled cake mixes should return them to the store where originally purchased. Questions about the recall may be directed to the Duncan Hines Consumer Care team at 888-299-7646, from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
