A Warren, Texas couple is suing 30 companies alleging they exposed him to the cancer causing chemical benzene, according to the Southeast Texas Record.
The lawsuit was filed by Royce Mathews and his wife Rose against in Jefferson County District Court in Beaumont, Texas. The lawsuit names Dow Chemical, Chevron, Atlantic Richfield, BP, ExxonMobil, Huntsman Petrochemical, Texaco and others as manufacturing and selling benzene-containing products to Goodyear Tire while he was employed there from 1966 to 2007
Mr. Mathews claims that his exposure to benzene in the workplace caused him to develop myelodysplastic syndrome, a group of disorders caused when something disrupts the production of blood cells. He says the defendants were negligent by not warning him of the dangers of benzene products.
According to the American Cancer Society, long-term exposure to benzene and other chemicals used in the petroleum and rubber industries can increase the risk for myelodysplastic syndrome. Benzene exposure has also been linked to blood cancers like acute myeloid leukemia.
Benzene is a colorless volatile liquid hydrocarbon in coal and petroleum that is widely used as a solvent in many industries. Both the Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer have determined that benzene is a known carcinogen. It can take years for benzene-related leukemias to develop.
