An accident on the set of the television series LA’s Finest that injured two of the show’s executives last month has resulted in a partial leg amputation.
According to Deadline Hollywood, executive co-producer Brandon Sonnier and co-showrunner Brandon Margolis were rushed to Los Angeles area hospitals after a stunt being filmed for a car crash scene in San Pedro, California, resulted in a real crash.
A source told Deadline that a stunt car crashed into a cargo crate, which sent the container and the car hurtling into the area behind the crate where the producers and director were watching the shoot on monitors.
Deadline reported that Mr. Sonnier has undergone an amputation of one of his legs below the knee. Mr. Margolis was treated for less serious injuries and released.
California’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) reportedly is investigating the accident to determine if it was the result of any workplace safety violations.
LA’s Finest is a forthcoming series starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. The show is a spin-off of the Bad Boys movie series, a detective action-comedy franchise set in Miami and starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
Deadline reports that the production was shut down and filming was suspended. The show was slated to premiere on Spectrum Originals May 13 but filming for the first season was wrapping up when the accident happened and it’s unclear if that date will be met.
Questions about the accident started to surface as doctors fought to save Mr. Sonnier’s leg, Deadline reported. One thing investigators may look into is the close proximity of the stunt scene to the “video village” – the area where film crew monitors the action.
