The number of lawsuits in multidistrict litigation (MDL) against makers of testosterone replacement therapies alleging the treatments caused cardiovascular side effects including death have significantly increased in recent months, according to a Reuters analysis of statistics from the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. More than 4,000 lawsuits have been filed in federal court against various manufacturers of products including Androgel, Testim and Axiron. Doctors reluctant to prescribe testosterone therapy

Doctors are more reluctant to prescribe testosterone therapy to male patients than they were years ago, according to an international survey of endocrinologists. The study was designed to document current practices in the approach to low testosterone in older men. “Given that recommendations are based on low-level evidence, we hypothesized that there would be a wide variety in clinical practice patterns,” researchers wrote. Women should not be treated with testosterone therapy, Endocrine Society advises

Low testosterone is not a valid diagnosis in healthy women, and most women with low amounts of the hormone should not use testosterone-replacement drugs, the Endocrine Society said in a new guideline. “Although limited research suggests testosterone therapy in menopausal women may be linked to improved sexual function, there are too many unanswered questions to justify prescribing testosterone therapy to otherwise healthy women,” guideline task force chair Dr. Margaret Wierman, of the University of Colorado, said in news release.
