A wrongful death lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York after a woman linked her husband’s death to the Vulto Creamery raw milk cheese recall. According to Food Safety News, Vermont resident Veronica Friedman filed the wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of her late husband Richard Friedman, alleging he suffered a massive stroke caused by a Listeriosis infection he procured from ingesting the recalled raw milk cheese last year. “People think of food poisoning as inconvenient rather than really dangerous,” said William D. Whole Foods Market expands cheese recall following reports of hospitalizations; two deaths

Raw milk cheeses are under fire again as Whole Foods announces it will be expanding its initial cheese recall in hopes of protecting more consumers from potential Listeria monocytogenes. Only eight stores are affected, spread across New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. According to the FDA, Whole Foods will be including Vulto Creamery’s Andes, Hamden and Walton Umber raw milk cheeses in its initial recall of Ouleout and Miranda soft wash-rind raw milk cheeses. After a reported two deaths and six hospitalizations, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an investigation of a listeriosis outbreak in connection with Vulto Creamery’s soft raw cheese recall. Vulto Creamery announced its cheese recall earlier this week, stating that its Ouleout, Miranda, Heinennellie and Willowemoc soft wash-rind raw milk cheeses tested positive for Listeria monoytogenes. Sargento Foods Inc., one of the largest cheesemakers in the nation, is expanding its initial recall of specialty Longhorn Colby cheese to include products packaged on the same lines as the cheeses recalled last week. The recalled cheese may be contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes, according to its supplier Deutsch Kase Haus. Guggisberg Cheese Inc. has announced a recall of several types of Colby type cheeses and sizes upon learning they may be contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes.
