Artificial hip recall leads to FDA review of metal-on-metal hip implants

Michael Stieler’s hip replacement surgery brought him relief from the pain he suffered when the cartilage in his right hip had worn down. But a year after surgery, Michael’s pain returned, with a vengeance. “It hurt. I couldn’t even walk on it,” he told the Sacramento Bee. It wasn’t until two years later that Michael learned that the problem with his metal-on-metal hip implant was not uncommon. The company that made his artificial hip, DePuy Orthopaedics, notified Michael last September that it was recalling the implants because of early failure rates and the potential for leaching of high levels of ... FDA takes bold move, orders studies on metal hip implants

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is exercising its broadest level of authority to conduct studies of metal-on-metal hip replacement systems to determine if the type of artificial hip implant is shedding metal debris, causing painful soft tissue damage from a type of blood poisoning known as metallosis. The study will look at this and other issues with this category of implants, which includes about 20 manufacturers. The announcement comes less than a year after DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, announced a recall of about 93,000 metal-on-metal hip replacement systems because the devices were failing at a higher ... Five Chicago hip implant patients file lawsuits against DePuy

An ABC affiliate in Chicago reports that five Chicago area residents are filing lawsuits against DePuy Orthopedics, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, over their defective hip implant devices. According to ABC 7 Chicago, the DePuy hip implant recipients accuse the manufacturer of ignoring evidence that the hip implant devices were defective and then acting too slowly to recall them. The implants contain large metal-on-metal components which with friction release potentially toxic heavy metals into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue. DePuy artificial hip recipients across the United States have reported symptoms associated with metalosis or metal poisoning because of the faulty ... Read More

Journal report describes devastating effects of defective artificial hips

The online edition of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery has published a case report today entitled Arthroprosthetic Cobaltism: Neurological and Cardiac Manifestations in Two Patients with Metal-on-Metal Arthroplasty. In other words, the article describes the real-life brain-function and heart problems caused by heavy metal poisoning – a common complaint found in patients who receive defective DePuy hip replacements. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this article is that its author, Dr. Stephen S. Tower of the Anchorage Fracture and Orthopedic Clinic in Anchorage, Alaska, is also one of the two subjects featured in the anthroplasty report. Dr. Tower and the ... Read More
