Some pills are available by prescription but are restricted to those with higher body mass indexes, or have weight-related health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. So, many people opt to use dietary supplements for weight loss. “While some of these pills could be a good choice for people who need to jump-start their weight loss or who are stuck in a weight-loss rut, not all diet pills are safe, and many contain concerning ... Could X-rays, mammograms be linked to rising thyroid cancer rates?

The incidence of many cancers is decreasing, but thyroid cancer is on the rise. Popular television host Dr. Oz this week suggested the increase could be linked to excessive use of dental X-rays and mammograms. Risk factors for thyroid cancer include hereditary conditions and iodine deficiency, though the latter is rare in the United States because of iodized salts. Thyroid cancer is also four times more likely to occur in women than men, leading some to suggest that estrogen might fuel the growth of thyroid cancer. (Estrogen is also linked to some types of breast cancer.) Another leading risk factor for ... Read More

Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the famed Dr. Oz show, created quite a stir in October when he reported that levels of arsenic in some store-bought apple juices were so high they were unsafe for children and adults. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) turned a blind eye to Dr. Oz’s concern, refusing to accept the television doctor’s offer to come on his show, and downplaying the concerns in a statement saying Dr. Oz’s study was “extremely irresponsible.” But a new study by Consumer Reports suggests that there may be several apple and grape juices on the market that have ...
