Risperdal linked to fall risk that could result in fractures

Patients who taking the antipsychotic drug Risperdal are at risk for falls that could result in injuries, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned. The drug’s safety label was recently updated and approved by the FDA. Risperdal, which contains the active ingredient risperidone, is FDA-approved to treat adults and children with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability with autism. It is often used off-label to treat behavioral conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Atypical antipsychotics linked to fall risk

The safety labels of several atypical antipsychotic drugs have been updated to include a new subsection under the Warnings and Precautions sections regarding falls. The risk was also added to the Adverse Events sections of the drugs. The new warning states that use of these drugs may cause “somnolence, postural hypotension, motor and sensory instability, which may lead to falls and, consequently, fractures or other injuries.” Drugs affected by the safety label changes include the brand names Risperdal (risperidone), Fanapt (iloperidone), Rexulti (brexpiprazole), Saphris (asenapine maleate), Seroquel and Seroquel XR (quetiapine fumarate), and Vraylar (caripraszine hydrochloride). Fall risk, fractures more likely among elderly patients using antidepressants

Elderly patients treated with antidepressants to treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease have nearly double the risk of having a hip fracture, and the risk remains high even four years after the initiation of therapy, according to a new study from the University of Eastern Finland. Hip fractures are a serious injury that can be life threatening. They are even more dangerous – and prevalent – in the elderly. Multiple medications, poor vision and balance problems make older individuals more apt to trip and fall. And falls more often lead to fractures, particularly in the hip, of the elderly because their bones tend to weaken ... Read More

Type 2 diabetes drug class shares risk/benefit profiles

Johnson & Johnson is arguing that its type 2 diabetes treatment Invokana should have the same life-saving capabilities as its rival drug Jardiance showed in a new, large clinical trial. Jardiance, made by Eli Lilly and Co., announced last month results from a three-year study that showed Jardiance cut death risk by 32 percent in patients with type 2 diabetes at risk of heart attack and stroke. The news sent prescriptions for the drug skyrocketing, nearly doubling for the quarter to $340 million. Johnson & Johnson, whose drug Invokana shares the same class as Jardiance, wants in on that action. ... Read More

New Ambien safety label warns of severe injury risk

The safety label for the prescription sleep aid Ambien (zolpidem tartrate) has been updated to include a new warning for severe injuries, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced. “Zolpidem can cause drowsiness and a decreased level of consciousness, which may lead to falls and consequently to severe injuries,” the new warning states. “Severe injuries such as hip fractures and intracranial hemorrhage have been reported.” A 2012 study linked the commonly prescribed sleeping pill to a greatly increased risk of falls in hospital patients. The Mayo Clinic study of more than 16,000 hospitalized patients found that the fall rate among ... Read More
