Antibiotic-resistant salmonella in Foster Farms chicken worries health officials

An outbreak of salmonella that has sickened 300 people in 18 states has public health officials investigating the sources of contamination worried that the particular strain of bacteria is extremely antibiotic-resistant. The massive outbreak is linked to raw chicken from Foster Farms facilities in California and is the second major salmonella outbreak this year traced to the company. Feds can’t investigate horrific Tenn. bus crash amid government shutdown

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it would not investigate a deadly Tennessee bus crash because all of the agency’s highway investigators have been furloughed amid the government shutdown. The Oct. 3 crash occurred on Interstate 40 east of Knoxville, Tenn., leaving 8 people dead and injuring more than a dozen others. The government shutdown that began midnight Tuesday will result in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) temporarily stopping routine facility and food safety inspections. However, the agency will continue to conduct activities vital to public health, including emergencies, high-risk recalls, civil and criminal investigations and import entry reviews.
