European lawmakers allowed to see scientific studies on glyphosate safety

European lawmakers will be given access to scientific studies involving glyphosate, the active ingredient in the widely used weed killer Roundup, an E.U. court ruled. The studies were used by the European Food and Safety Agency in order to approve the use of glyphosate, but the agency refused to share the studies with lawmakers over concerns that doing so could harm the commercial interests of companies. The safety of glyphosate has been in question around the world for years. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015 classified the chemical as a probable carcinogen. Last August, ... Read More

Miami bans use of glyphosate-containing weed killers

Miami, Florida, city commissioners have banned the use of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the widely used weed killer Roundup, in an effort to improve water quality and protect public health. “Water quality issues are so important to the city of Miami, and we can be one of the worst polluters as a municipality,” said Commissioner Ken Russell, who sponsored the resolution. “We ask for residents to make a change in their habits and that they be conscious of what they put in their gardens, but when I realized the totality of what the city uses at any given time, ... Environmental group urges Cape towns to stop using Roundup

Environmental advocacy group POCCA (protect our Cape Cod Aquifer) is urging all 15 Cape Cod towns to refrain from applying glyphosate-containing herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup in an effort to protect the health of local citizens. “Glyphosate has proven harmful to people as well as bees,” said Laura Kelley, president of POCCA, and a beekeeper. “There are now 15 countries that don’t allow the sale or use of glyphosate products. We’re asking the town to become a leader and to do the right thing by just taking the next step.” Six months ago, the first lawsuit against Bayer AG’s unit Monsanto ... Read More

Latest Roundup trial currently underway

The first federal trial involving claims that Monsanto’s weed killer Roundup caused cancer is underway in San Francisco, and the outcome may determine the fate of hundreds of similar lawsuits. Edwin Hardeman claims he used Roundup on his 56-acre property in Sonoma County from the 1980s until 2012. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2015. He claims that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is carcinogenic and contributed to his non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis. Hardeman’s case is one of about 8,000 filed against Monsanto, and the second to be tried. His trial comes six months after a California jury awarded ... Read More

Traces of Roundup weed killer found in beer, wine

Glyphosate, the controversial ingredient in the weed killer Roundup, has been found in 19 out of 20 wine and beer brands tested by public interest group U.S. PRIG, including some brands that claim to be organic. “This chemical could prove a true risk to so many Americans’ health, and they should know that it is everywhere – including many of their favorite drinks,” study author and U.S. PRIG Toxic’s Director Kara Cook-Schultz told USA Today. Sutter Home Merlot had the highest concentration of glyphosate – 51.4 parts per billion (ppb). Tsingtao Beer was a close second with 49.7 ppb. WINE ... Read More

Washington man files lawsuit against Monsanto

When Leonard Tierney was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in May 2018, his friend suggested he talk to an attorney. It was his hunch that Tierney’s disease may have been caused by his exposure to the chemical glyphosate in the herbicide Roundup. Tierney started a landscape, construction and maintenance business in 1999, and had employees do most of the construction work. His love was landscaping. He had returned to school to study horticulture, and enjoyed working in his clients’ yards. He swore by Roundup, strapping a backpack-style sprayer on when he treated yards. He remembered how the container would leak from ... Read More

Lawsuit claims Roundup herbicide disrupts healthy gut bacteria

Monsanto, which was acquired by Bayer AG last year, is facing thousands of lawsuits alleging an ingredient in its Roundup weed killer causes cancer. But a new class action lawsuit filed in Kansas City, Missouri, claims that the glyphosate in the herbicide attacks a gut enzyme found in the beneficial intestinal flora of humans and some animals. The suit says the companies deceived consumers about the product’s safety. In recent years, gut bacteria have played a more prominent role in medical research, with unhealthy intestinal microbiome being blamed on everything from depression to obesity. The lawsuit claims that Monsanto misled ... Read More

California town bans Roundup around city’s playgrounds

Effective immediately, the town of Lodi, California, will ban the use the weed killer Roundup within 25 feet of the city’s 17 playgrounds in an effort to protect children from possible health hazards of the herbicide’s active ingredient, glyphosate. “State law currently does not allow smoking with 25 feet of a playground, and so we felt that was a good standard, a good number to use for this first step,” said Jeff Hood, Director of the Lodi Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department. The announcement comes six months after a California jury ordered Monsanto to pay a school groundskeeper $289 ... Read More

Researcher ‘convinced’ Roundup weed killer causes cancer

A University of Washington researcher said she is “convinced” that the active ingredient glyphosate in the commonly used weed killer Roundup can cause cancer after conducting an analysis with colleagues on the chemical. Lianne Sheppard, senior author and professor of biostatistics and environmental and occupational health sciences, said she and colleagues found a “compelling link” between people with the “highest exposure” to glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system. “All of the meta-analysis conducted to date, including our own, consistently report the same key finding; exposure to GBHs (glyphosate-based herbicides) ... Wyoming man blames Roundup for his lymphoma diagnosis

A Wyoming man is suing Monsanto alleging the agrochemical company’s Roundup weed killer contributed to his non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) diagnosis. The federal lawsuit comes just six months after Monsanto was ordered by a California jury to pay a school groundskeeper $289 million after finding his exposure to glyphosate in Roundup was the cause of his terminal NHL. (Monsanto appealed and the award was reduced to $78 million.) The recent lawsuit involves the case of Jace Florquist, and is one of more than 8,000 filed against Monsanto alleging a link between glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, and NHL. According to ... Read More
