Massive SoCal Natural Gas Leak Expected To Last For Months

It’s like BP’s catastrophic Gulf oil spill, only it’s in the sky above Southern California. Southern California Gas Company’s Aliso Canyon natural gas leak near Porter Ranch, Calif., has been spewing 50 metric tons of gas every hour into the sky above the Los Angeles area since October. And, like BP’s runaway Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico, engineers have no idea how they can stop this leak, which environmental authorities estimate accounts for a quarter of all of California’s greenhouse gas emissions. On the ground, residents in and around Porter Ranch are reporting being sickened by noxious ... Read More

BP oil spill emitted up to 520,000 tons of noxious methane gas

BP’s Deepwater Horizon explosion set off the worst oil spill in United States history, but all of that sticky crude wasn’t the only hydrocarbon that gushed from the blown-out Macondo well. According to the research journal Nature Geoscience, up to 40 percent of the catastrophic spill that gushed for 84 days was methane gas. Scientists who authored the study estimate the total volume of escaped gas between 260,000 and 520,000 tons – the energy equivalent of 1.6 to 3.1 million barrels of oil and enough to account for 2.6 percent of the annual net methane emissions worldwide. Although scientists understand ... Read More

TVA to add scrubbers to clean up Kingston smokestacks

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is putting smokestack scrubbers at its Kingston, Tenn., plant, which will clean a greenhouse gas that comes out of its smokestacks and into the air. But in order to do so, the nation’s largest utility will also have to create a new landfill to store the material left behind. The scrubbers will remove sulfur dioxide, a greenhouse gas produced by burning fossil fuels, by venting flue gas through a limestone slurry shower. During this process, the limestone reacts with the sulfur creating gypsum, a stable, nontoxic material that can be recycled and used as an ... Read More
