NHTSA: Deadly Greyhound bus crash result of Improperly Marked Highway Lanes

A federal investigation into a deadly Greyhound bus crash in San Jose, California, last year found that improperly marked highway lanes caused the accident, which killed two passengers and injured 13 others. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) failed to mark the stretch of U.S. Highway 101 where the crash occurred with reflective warning markers, causing the bus driver to think that he was in the proper lane to connect to Highway 85 when he was actually driving toward a concrete barrier. The crash occurred on Jan. 19, 2016, around 6:30 in ... Read More

According to the FMCSA report, the number of people killed in crashes involving large trucks and buses fell from 4,278 in 2013 to 4,161 in 2014 – ... Read More

Poor safety prompts closure of 26 discount bus companies

Federal safety regulators made one of the most sweeping crackdowns on the commercial passenger bus industry Thursday, ordering 26 New York City discount bus companies to shut down. Companies targeted in the crackdown offered steeply discounted fares between New York’s Chinatown and numerous destinations along the East Coast, including Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Connecticut casinos, Washington DC, Florida, and other places. These “Chinatown buses,” as they are commonly called, offer tickets priced 50 to 90 percent less than standard Greyhound fares, making them popular with students, retirees, and working-class immigrants. According to federal officials, the 26 shuttered companies were ... Read More

NHTSA may soon require safety belts in all new motor coaches

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed requiring safety belts in all new passenger buses and large school buses. The lap and shoulder belts would be mandatory on all passenger seats and the driver’s seat as well. The proposal, which would amend the federal motor vehicle safety standard on occupant crash protection (FMVSS No. 208), is intended to prevent the ejection of bus occupants in a crash or rollover. If passed, the measure is expected to prevent nearly 800 injuries and save 8 lives annually. The proposal estimates the total cost of adding belts, changing the anchorages, and reinforcing ...
