Indiana authorities say lake-effect snow causing whiteout conditions and a glazed-over highway were some of the factors contributing to a massive pileup on Interstate 94 in northwestern Indiana Thursday afternoon that killed three people and injured as many as 30 others. Three people were killed and at least 25 others were injured in a traffic pileup involving nearly 100 vehicles in southwestern Virginia near the North Carolina border Easter Sunday. The series of collisions occurred on Interstate 77 southbound in southwest Virginia, starting around 1:15 p.m. The Associated Press reported that Virginia State Police investigating the massive pileup determined that there were 17 separate crashes involving 95 vehicles. The giant winter storm meteorologists named Nemo is likely to blame for 19-vehicle pileup in Falmouth, Maine, authorities investigating the series of crashes said. The pileup started Friday morning on I-295 after one car apparently spun out of control in the southbound lane, setting off a chain reaction. A 12-year-old girl was killed and at least 20 others were injured Jan. 21 in a massive pileup of cars and trucks on an Ohio highway. Authorities believe the initial crash on Interstate 275 near Cincinnati occurred around 11:30 a.m. and quickly turned into a pileup involving 87 passenger vehicles and 16 tractor trailers. Survivors of a deadly multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 75 south of Gainesville, Florida, blamed a blinding mixture of fog and smoke from a brush fire for the crash that killed 10 people and injured 18 others, some of them seriously.
