Outbreak of Salmonella poisoning linked to Alabama caterer sickens 99

Health officials have suspended the operating permit of a north Alabama catering company by emergency order after at least 99 people became sickened from eating Salmonella-contaminated food the company provided at a wedding. The Alabama Department of Public Health tested samples of the food served at a Nov. 12 wedding in Sheffield, Ala., and found Salmonella enteritidis bacteria in specimens of cooked chicken and green beans. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has entered a permanent injunction against Kwong Tung Foods Inc., doing business as Canton Foods, and its owner Kwong “Victor” C. Wang and vice president Juney H. Wang, for significant and ongoing violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act. CVS Pharmacy is recalling specific lots of Gold Emblem Abound Organic Spiced Herbal Tea due to possible salmonella contamination. An ingredient produced by the manufacturer’s raw material supplier tested positive for salmonella in another company’s product. CVS Pharmacy’s Gold Emblem product also contains this ingredient. Chipotle Mexican Grill has been hit by two lawsuits filed by people who were sickened during multiple food poisoning outbreaks at the restaurants across the country in recent months. Kelly Aherns filed a lawsuit in Minnesota when she became infected with salmonella after eating at a Chipotle in August.
