Sunbeam Products slammed with $4.5M civil penalty after failure to report defective coffeemakers

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Sunbeam Products Inc. has agreed to pay a $4.5 million civil penalty for failing to report its defective Mr. Coffee Single Cup Brewing Systems. The defective coffeemakers were later recalled in August 2012 after it was determined they posed an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death to unsuspecting consumers. From 2011 through 2012, Sunbeam received several complaints regarding the coffeemaker’s issues, including reports of 32 burn injuries from the coffeemakers’ brewing chamber opening and spraying hot water and coffee grounds at consumers. Sunbeam announces iron recall due to reports of overheating; three fires

After reports of overheating and fires, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Sunbeam Products Inc. are now recalling about 5,700 convertible clothes irons. The defective Sunbeam irons suffer from a wiring defect that allows them to overheat, thus posing a fire hazard to unsuspecting consumers. The Sunbeam® Convertible Irons highlighted in this recall can be identified by its model number of GCSBRS – 103, which can be found on the iron’s plastic base. Reports of property damage lead to substantial recall of Sunbeam oil-filled heaters

Following several reports of hot oil being sprayed, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Sunbeam Products, Inc., has announced a recall of nearly 34,000 Sunbeam Oil-Filled Heaters that pose a scald hazard. The heaters come in either black or white and measure about 23 inches tall, 6 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Each oil-filled heater will have a label printed on its bottom with either model number HOH3000 or HOH3000B. The power switch and temperature control will be near the heater’s “Holmes” logo.
