FMCSA Urges Commercial Drivers To Take Tire Safety Measures

Whether they’re hauling passengers, hazardous material, or other cargo, there is a lot riding on any commercial vehicle’s tires. Accidents stemming from the tires on commercial vehicles have federal regulators concerned that not enough is being done to ensure that tires are properly maintained and inspected. Tire problems caused about 8,000 accidents per year in commercial trucks alone, according to federal transportation data. These accidents account for about 6 percent of all commercial truck accidents. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigations recognizes a number of factors that ... NTSB Pushes To Fix Flawed Tire Recall System

Auto manufacturers and suppliers are usually able to track down vehicle owners whenever a safety recall is underway and make any needed repairs.  But when tires are recalled over safety concerns, manufacturers may not be able to find and contact customers. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation, the U.S. needs a better tire recall system to connect tire manufacturers with customers because the way tires are currently registered and recalled is ineffective. “Our investigation revealed that very few tires are actually registered for recall purposes,” said NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart. “So manufacturers cannot contact drivers if their ... Too many U.S. drivers neglectful of proper tire pressure, study finds

“Tires are the Rodney Dangerfield of cars — they get no respect,” Dan Zielinski of the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) told TheStreet.com. “They always look round and black no matter what shape they’re in, so people say: ‘Oh, they look OK.” According to TheStreet.com, a recent test conducted by the RMA of about 3,300 vehicles in 26 cities across the U.S. found that only 9 percent of drivers had all four tires inflated to the proper levels. Improperly inflated tires can cause blowouts and other dangerous problems, whether they are underinflated or overinflated. The study also found that 69 percent ... Read More
