The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is relaxing training requirements for Class B commercial truck drivers seeking to upgrade to a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) by eliminating redundant classroom instruction. The rule change, published by the FMCSA in the Federal Register on March 14, is actually a rollback of driver training regulations published in December 2016. Canada Bus Crash Survivor Goes Home After 11 Months in Hospital

A Canadian high school hockey player who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a deadly bus crash last year has been released from the hospital after a 333-day stay. Morgan Gobeil was one of 13 members of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team who were injured April 6, 2018, when their bus rammed a tractor-trailer that had run a stop sign. Sixteen others, including 10 of the hockey players, were killed in the crash. An Ohio-licensed commercial truck driver who struck and killed two people with his tractor-trailer in separate accidents within six months has been deemed a hazard to public safety, federal officials said. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) ordered truck driver Doug Jones to cease driving a tractor-trailer or operating any other commercial motor vehicle across state lines after the second deadly accident. Authorities are investigating a deadly underride crash that killed one person and critically injured two others when the van they were in collided with the back of a tractor-trailer in Beaufort, South Carolina, Feb. 17. The underride crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. when for reasons not yet known the van crashed into the back of the tractor-trailer. An allegedly intoxicated tractor-trailer driver who caused a deadly six-vehicle pileup in Orcutt, California, will face at least two criminal charges, investigating authorities say. On Feb. 7, Gilbert Pena, 56, was driving a tractor-trailer on Highway 135 southbound in Orcutt when his truck slammed into the back of a Nissan sedan, killing 60-year-old Orcutt resident Rickie Motley and his passenger, 24-year-old Solvang resident Jesse Donald Gluyas. Fatal crashes involving large commercial vehicles are on the rise in the U.S., with work-zone accidents and crashes resulting in vehicle occupant deaths showing an alarming upward trend, according to safety data reported by federal regulators. A 22-year veteran of Rhode Island’s public works department was killed last month after a tractor-trailer truck ran over his chest. Police responded to a workplace accident at the Westerly Town Highway Garage, and found Angelo Turano, 53, chief mechanic for the Department of Public Works, on the ground in front of the rear tires of an 18-wheeler.
